Some Cobb County voters divided on Republican candidate choice

Those voting in the Republican Presidential Primary at one Cobb County precinct appeared to have been divided by gender.

In an unscientific survey, the majority of men casting their ballots at Cumberland United Methodist church in Smyrna told WABE they voted for Newt Gingrich. The former House Speaker represented a portion of Cobb County in Congress for two decades. 39-year-old Marietta resident Joel Flournoy says that’s one of the many reasons he backed Gingrich.

“I just think he’s the best candidate as far as being in Washington for as many years as he’s been there. I just think he might be able to run against Obama and hopefully get in office.”

68-year-old semi-retired small business owner Allen Barber also voted for Gingrich.

“There needs to be somebody elected who’s going to actually do something. I think Newt has demonstrated in the past that he’s capable of doing things, or at least trying to do things and not necessarily appeasing the establishment.”

But women that WABE spoke with overwhelmingly supported Mitt Romney. That was the case with Vinings area resident Carolyn Smith.

“With his business experience I just think he’ll be able to offer America jobs, financial security, which we all need and want. I just think we need to make a change in America.”

A small number of other Republican voters told WABE they chose not to participate in the primary because they didn’t like any of the choices.
