2500 to run in Atlanta Marathon Sunday

Some 2500 runners will take to the streets Sunday for the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay.

The race starts at Atlantic Station at 7:00 a.m. Sunday and will its way wind around the city. The course extends as far north as Buckhead and as far south as Grant Park before ending back at Atlantic Station.

You can count on street closures all around town, but the Atlanta Track Club, which sponsors the race, says each part of the course will re-open as soon as the runners pass through. Click here for a map of the course. Click here for a complete list of road closures.

You can enter the race as late as 6:00 p.m. Saturday by signing up at Fleet Feet Sports in Sandy Springs.

In addition to the runners and several hundred volunteers, 24 nonprofit organizations will be represented at the marathon.

The Atlanta Track Club has created an “Adopt-a-Mile” program for the nonprofits. In exchange for providing volunteers for each mile, Executive Director Tracey Russell says the club will make a donation to each organization.

She calls it a “win-win situation, explaining, “You know, when you’re running a marathon, it’s so fun to have some entertainment along the way, and these 24 nonprofits are providing that to our runners. And they’re getting inspired because they’re watching out there on Sunday morning people accomplishing a really cool goal.”

Russell says, last year, The Center for Puppetry Arts entertained runners along their mile with life-sized puppets.

The Atlanta Track Club hopes to donate more than $130,000  this year to local organizations.
