A constitutional amendment to reestablish a state commission to authorize charter schools that have been turned down by local school boards has passed. With most of Georgia’s precincts reporting early Wednesday, the unofficial results show voters approved the measure 58 percent to 41 percent.
Supporters of amendment one are elated with the results. From the time they walked into Ivy Preparatory Academy’s Kirkwood Campus, charter school parents, teachers and elected officials were optimistic the measure would pass. Pierre Shephard has a seventh grade daughter who attends the school.
