Atlanta Food Bank Nearly Doubles Distribution in Three Years
In the last three years, the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) has increased its distribution by 85%, and the organization does not expect the need to go away any time soon.
Bill Bolling, ACFB Founder and Executive Director, says about 20% of the people getting food from the bank this year say it is the first time they have ever had to ask for help.
Bolling says, working with ACFB’s clients, he sees that “many people have a lower standard of living now, and things are harder for ‘em, that there’s less cash available to help people through an emergency. What we do have though is a network of organizations with surplus food. So I think it’s a fallback for people that are on tough times.”
Bolling says half the people his organization served this year had some kind of job, but many are underemployed. He says rising healthcare costs also impact their ability to make ends meet.
The Atlanta Community Food Bank serves 29 counties in the metro area.
