In the Garden with Geri: Mosquito-Repelling Herbs

Recent weeks have brought us plenty of rain in metro Atlanta, and in this warm-weather season, that means one sure thing for the great outdoors: mosquitoes.

Horticulturist Geri Laufer invited us to her thriving garden to talk about plants that actually deter this pest—making summertime cookouts and dinner parties a little more comfortable.

Geri Laufer’s Tips on Repelling Mosquitoes in Your Yard:

These plants. Plant them in pots or the ground, or cut them for vases or bouquets:

  • Lavender
  • Marigolds, Artemesia, Feverfew and other members of the Daisy family
  • Lemon Balm
  • Cat Mint
  • Bee Balm
  • Lemongrass
  • Lemon Thyme
  • Ageratum
  • Pennyroyal
  • Citronella Grass
  • Yarrow

Also, be sure to dump out any sources of standing water in your yard from bird baths or empty flower pots. When gathering outside, arrange scarves infused with lavender or lemon verbena oil atop the backs of deck chairs, and set up a fan to create an artificial breeze on your porch, to drive away the small biting bugs.
