Nov. 4 General Election Results – Live Updates

WABE’s and NPR’s election night special has ended, but we’ll have more information, and analysis coming up on wabe.org and during Morning Edition on 90.1FM.

This post contains election results and  updates on selected races as we receive the vote counts from the Georgia Secretary of State’s office.

This information will be updated regularly throughout the evening as we receive new information about the results.

With almost 95% of the votes counted, Republicans have swept all of the statewide offices in Georgia.  Both David Perdue and Nathan Deal won their elections by margins sufficient to avoid runoff elections.

By a lopsided margin, Clayton County voters approved public transportation by joining MARTA and agreed to increase their sales tax by one cent to pay for it.  The vote was 72.9% in favor, 27.1% opposed.

In Fulton County, John Eaves and Emma Darnell were both reelected to the Fulton County Commission.

And in the 12th Congressional District, we should note that longtime Democratic congressman John Barrow lost to Republican challenger Rick Allen.  Barrow has been targeted for defeat before by the GOP before, but he had always managed to survive.  This time he lost, with Rick Allen receiving close to 55% of the vote to Barrow’s 45%.

Voters also approved a constitutional amendment that prohibits the Legislature from raising the state income tax any higher than its current level.

Below are the totals for several of the most important statewide and metro Atlanta contested races.

This will be our last update of the evening.  Thank you for joining us.  Look for more coverage of the election tomorrow on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

We have some new figures on the MARTA referendum in Clayton County.

With just over 70% of the precincts reporting, the Republican candidates continue to maintain solid leads in every race.  The big metro counties have yet to report, but the leads the GOP candidates have built are becoming very difficult to overcome.

We now have some numbers on the two contested races for seats on the Fulton County Commission, including that of current chairman John Eaves.

Clayton County MARTA Referendum:  We are awaiting numbers from Clayton County on the referendum to have MARTA provide public transit in the county.

Here are updated vote totals as of 8:55 p.m.

Note: the original version of this table had the Deal and Carter totals reversed.  The current version of this table is correct.  We regret the error.
