Barry Dupree says his story is not unique — but it is powerful.

The formerly homeless client of the Gateway Center said that overcoming addiction was the beginning of changing his life for the better—ultimately creating the pathway for him to get his GED and enroll in Toastmasters to become a public speaker.

“I listened to my counselors, I did what they told me to do got on my knees and prayed and I took it off my hands and gave it to God,” said Dupree.

Dupree along with Raphael Holloway, the CEO of Gateway Center, and Mellony Gaston, the social services director at the Atlanta Children’s Shelter, were guests on a recent episode of “Closer Look.”

They talked with program host Rose Scott about the recent drop in Atlanta’s homeless population and the ongoing efforts to find permanent housing and wraparound services for those in need.
