Gov. Deal May Call Special Session If Lawmakers Can’t Pass Transportation Bill

Gov. Nathan Deal is warning that he may call a special legislative session this summer if lawmakers can’t work out their differences on a transportation bill.

This year’s session is scheduled to end next Thursday.

Deal spokesman Brian Robinson says lawmakers should hold off on making summer vacation plans.

“A special session this summer in July is a possibility. Certainly it’s not something that he relishes nor something that any legislator relishes but it’s something that needs to get done because it’s a critically important issue,” said Robinson.

The House and Senate are pushing different plans to raise money for the state’s ailing network of roads and bridges. A major point of contention among Republican leaders is how much should be raised.

“A billion dollars for maintenance and repair. That is the minimum of what we need,” said Robinson. “Anything less than that is not worth the effort we’ve all put into it.”

But some lawmakers, including House Majority Leader Larry O’Neal and House Minority Whip Matt Ramsey, have argued a billion dollars is too much.
