Cobb County Airport To Add International Arrivals

Cobb County’s airport will soon offer international arrivals for small planes and corporate jets. Later this month, an $800,000 customs facility will open at McCollum Field.

The 2,900-square-foot structure includes waiting and inspection areas, a holding cell and an interview room.

Karl Von Hagel is the airport’s manager. He says adding customs will help businesses in Cobb County.

“They may be able to compete now internationally, and those international companies may look at Cobb County and say we can fly in there, we can visit our contractor very easily and leave without having a long drive,” Von Hagel says.

He hopes the new facility will have a ripple effect and bring more aviation traffic.

“If Cobb County Airport has a customs facility,” he says, “and they consider us for their customs inspections on international arrivals, they may consider us on their next trip which may be a domestic flight.”

The new customs facility is expected to provide a bump in fuel sales. It will also help McCollum Field better compete with DeKalb-Peachtree Airport and Brown Field in Fulton County.
