DeKalb County Purchasing Cards Suspended Amid Investigation

As of Friday, hundreds of DeKalb County government officials and employees won’t be able to use their county purchasing cards. Interim CEO Lee May is suspending the p-cards amid an investigation into potential corruption in the county.

May decided to suspend the cards, including his own, based on the recommendation of special investigators Mike Bowers and Richard Hyde. The p-cards function like debit cards and allow elected officials and some county employees to pay for work-related expenses. May says the cards have been an “ongoing concern.”

“It has posed a crisis in confidence in the uses of p-cards within the community, within the general public, and we want to restore public trust in all of our decisions,” May says.

An audit last year revealed commissioners and their staff did not turn in receipts for many of their p-card purchases. Last year, former DeKalb Commissioner Elaine Boyer pleaded guilty to using her county p-card for personal expenses like hotel rooms and airline tickets.

The investigation was launched by Lee in March and is expected to wrap up in July. In the meantime, Lee says some exceptions will be made for departments that experience emergencies.
