Florida, Georgia Governors Hold Private Meeting On Water
The governors of Florida and Georgia are discussing how to resolve a long-running water dispute.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott met for an hour Tuesday with Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal at the governor’s mansion.
The meeting comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear a challenge from Florida seeking to limit Georgia’s withdrawals from the Chattahoochee River.
Deal requested the meeting with Scott. The meeting was held behind closed doors.
Florida argues that Georgia is guzzling more than its share of water for growing Atlanta at the expense of the Apalachicola Bay oyster fishery.
In 2013, Scott took the legal battle to the Supreme Court after the oyster industry nearly collapsed.
A spokeswoman for Scott gave few details about the meeting. She said Scott will continue to fight for those whose livelihood depends on the bay.
