Marietta Council To Vote On Homes Next To Battlefield Park

“From a battlefield preservation perspective, especially in a battlefield like this obviously we would prefer to keep as much of these surrounding landscape as historically accurate as possible,” Winegar says. 

Winegar says it’s the most visited civil war battlefield park in the country with more than two million visitors a year. The new homes, called the Estates of Parkside, will be up to 10,000 square feet. It will be on a 15-acre piece of land on Gilbert Road near Stilesboro Road. 

He says the developer of the homes is asking him to pave a gravel access road that the park owns. 

“It sort of subtly takes them back into time, not something that people are used to experiencing driving around on Atlanta roadways, so there’s some value in keeping it that way,” Winegar says. “However, with the development that’s going in, there’s also pressure to improve that road for the increase traffic.” 

Winegar is hopeful the architecture and design of the new homes will blend in with Kennesaw Mountain.
