Mayor Kasim Reed Names New Atlanta Fire Chief

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has named Joel Baker the chief of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.

Baker has been acting in that role since November and was named interim fire chief in January. He also served as interim chief for a stint in 2009.

“It is particularly meaningful to be chosen for this role after serving the City of Atlanta for more than twenty years,” Baker said in a statement.

Baker stepped in when Kelvin Cochran, the former chief, was fired for publishing a book about his religious beliefs without permission from the mayor. Many viewed the book as containing homophobic statements.

Cochran is now suing the city.

Baker has been with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department since 1988. He started his career with the East Point Fire Department.
