You go to an art gallery or festival, fall in love with a painting or photograph, and make the big decision to buy it.

But this is not the end of the story. It turns out that choosing the proper frame can actually make or break your experience of your beautiful new artwork.

WABE scored some tips for doing it right from Nashville-based art curator Sara Estes, who wrote a recent column on the subject for arts website Burnaway. She tells us how to choose the right frame, and why the consequences for choosing the wrong one can get very, very ugly.

Sara Estes’ Top Three Tips on Framing

Choose the frame to match the artwork, not your taste or the look of the room. Styles change. You want your artwork to endure.
Factor the cost of a frame into the cost of your artwork. A quality frame can protect your artwork for years to come, but it likely won’t run cheap.
If you’re framing a piece yourself, use linen tape, not scotch or masking tape
