Price As House Majority Leader Could Help Other Ga. Politicians
Georgia’s U.S. Rep. Tom Price of Roswell is competing to be the majority leader, the No. 2 spot in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Georgia Republican Rep. Tom Price of Roswell is competing to be the majority leader, the No. 2 spot in the House.
Speaker of the House John Boehner announced his resignation last week, and that has House Republicans jockeying for leadership positions.
Chris Grant, a political science professor at Mercer University, said if Price becomes majority leader, he would be involved in appointing committee leaders, and that could help Georgia politicians.
“I think that it gives Georgia representatives in the Republican caucus a sympathetic ear, somebody they’ve worked with, the ability to funnel information and advantageous legislative outcomes through the majority leader’s office,” he said.
Price’s main competitor in the race for majority leader is U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California is expected to win the race to replace Boehner as speaker of the House.
Grant thinks Price may actually be better suited for that job.
“He is good at being able to balance out interests,” Grant said. “He has a lot of skills at managing people.”
Grant said Price could bridge the divide between far-right Republicans and more moderates, which Boehner struggled to do throughout his time as speaker. McCarthy may also struggle in that position, and Price could be well-suited to step up as the leader of the House.
