Atlanta Gospel Singer Latrice Pace Shines In ‘Black Nativity’

Not many people can call themselves anointed, but Latrice Pace was born into gospel music royalty. As a member of the “Anointed Pace Sisters,” Pace has released five albums since 1992 – of which four hit Billboard’s gospel chart.

With her impressive background and family name, it’s a no-brainer for Pace to star in Dominion Entertainment Group LLC’s production of “Black Nativity.” “Black Nativity” is Langston Hughes’ landmark re-imagining of the Christmas nativity story, told through gospel music with an all-black cast.

Pace plays the scene-stealing Sister Frankly, whom she describes as “the church mother … I keep everybody in line, give you the side-eye … I’m just that church mother that you’re used to in those old, traditional churches.”

Pace joined Lois Reitzes for a live interview and the two listened to tracks from the original 1962 cast recording of “Black Nativity” and discussed her influences, gospel career and more.

“Black Nativity” opens Wednesday at the Southwest Arts Center and runs through Dec. 20.
