Theatrical Outfit’s Moxie Weaves World Of Stories Together

“Whatever affects one destiny affects us all.”
That is the big idea behind Theatrical Outfit’s current production, “Moxie.”
Traveling from war-torn Afghanistan to an inner-city classroom in Detroit — and many places in between — the show follows the journey of a handmade book as it passes from one reader to another.
This is the show’s world premiere. Written by the team of Atlantans Lane Carlock and Brian Kurlander, the production is being directed by film and theater veteran Elisa Carlson. The three joined producer Myke Johns for a conversation about the show’s origins in a mysterious package worthy of a fairy tale, and how the collaboration inherent in theater productions was necessary for this story to be told.
“Stories are the thread that weaves humanity together,” Kurlander says, prompting Carlson to chime in: “…that have a real healing power, I believe.”
“It’s a cliche,” Carlson says, “but we sat around the fire and we told each other stories and that’s how we make sense of the plot of our lives.”
Moxie is onstage at Theatrical Outfit through Feb. 28.
