US Sen. Johnny Isakson Responds To Attacks In Brussels

“ISIL must be eradicated,” said U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, reacting to reports that the self-declared Islamic State had claimed credit for Tuesday morning’s deadly explosions in Brussels.

Isakson remained critical of the Obama Administration’s policy of not deploying ground troops to “go after ISIL wherever they are.”

“Until we have a combination of special forces, not a huge force, but special forces that are well trained, in combination with our air force that has the capability to bomb, we’ll never totally eradicate ISIL,” said Isakson, who serves on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. “If we put them on the ground, we will.”

Isakson, who said he travels through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport every week, also said he was confident in both local and federal security at the world’s busiest airport.

“See we have jail cells at Hartsfield just to contain people who are trying to slip into our country, so our security at our airports in terms of access and egress for personnel coming from overseas into America is excellent,” Isakson said.

He praised special customs procedures for international travelers moving through Atlanta, which include fingerprint verification.

Reminded that the Brussels suspects are believed to have attacked that airport’s departure terminal prior to any security checks, Isakson said security may need to be increased.

“You know in Israel, at Ben-Gurion airport, they have six rings of security starting from when you enter the airport parking lot all the way up to when you get in the gate,” Isakson said. “We may need to think of something like that.”

After the attacks Tuesday, Hartsfield-Jackson officials announced the airport is on heightened alert.
