2 From Atlanta’s Manchester Orchestra Score ‘Swiss Army Man’

Andy Lee

“Swiss Army Man” tells a rather unconventional buddy story. Hank, played by Paul Dano, is on a deserted island and about to hang himself when he sees a corpse, played by Daniel Radcliffe, wash up on shore.

Hank escapes the island by riding the corpse across the ocean, using its gaseous buildup as a motor. On more friendly shores, the corpse reanimates, and Hank spends the movie trying to find his way home, teaching the corpse, who he names Manny, how to be human. There are meditations on life, love, death, friendship and what’s socially acceptable, along with a pile of fart jokes. (And if that’s not enough, the film’s creators, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known simply as the Daniels, are the minds behind Lil Jon’s nefarious “Turn Down for What” music video.)
