Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera is stepping down from his position within the Atlanta institution, according to a press release from Tech officials on Monday.
The announcement comes as Cabrera has been selected to serve as the next president and CEO of the Aspen Institute, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to “leadership, dialogue, and addressing society’s most pressing challenges.”
Aspen Institute’s Board of Trustees voted earlier today to appoint the education leader to the role.
“Georgia Tech transformed my life, first as a student and later as president,” Cabrera said in the release. “Leading this extraordinary institution has been the honor of a lifetime. I leave with immense gratitude for the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters who have made our shared progress possible and with tremendous confidence that Georgia Tech’s best days are still ahead.”
Cabrera’s appointment as Tech’s 12th president in 2019 led to record growth in enrollment, research, innovation and philanthropy, with enrollment rising to more than 56,000 students annually, making it one of the most sought-after public universities in the country.
