In the early ’90s, the feminist punk band Bikini Kill turned the status quo upside down with their dynamic music, empowering lyrics and confrontational live shows. The band was at the forefront of the Riot Grrrl movement and actively encouraged women and girls to play music and start bands as a form of cultural resistance.
Although the group broke up in 1997, they reunited in 2019 with original band members Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox and Tobi Vail. Bikini Kill will play the Eastern this Saturday, April 1. In this interview, “City Lights” senior producer Kim Drobes spoke with the lead singer Hanna ahead of the show.
