Simple Concepts, Complex Paper Engineering In Pop-Up Books
Alphabet books are simple in concept and in structure – a tidy, ordered sequence of the letters of the alphabet, from A to Z.
“Innovative” is not a word one would usually associate with alphabet books, so it’s with some distinction that the Washington Post called one such book, “ABC3D,” “easily the most innovative alphabet book of the year, if not the decade.” The first thing that stands out – quite literally – about “ABC3D” is that it’s a pop-up book.
Marion Bataille is the creator of “ABC3D,” among other treasured pop-up books. She’s on a tour of the states from her native France, holding workshops and sharing her pop-up paper-craft with students of all ages. Bataille stopped by WABE to speak with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes.
She explained that three-dimensional paper-craft was a hobby of hers for some 20 years, and once she dedicated her time to creating her own pop-up book (the aforementioned “ABC3D”), the project took two years to complete.
