In New Atlanta Opera Production, Silence Really Is Golden
The Atlanta Opera’s production of “Don Pasquale” sets the comic opera gem in the golden era of Hollywood. The title character, played by Burak Bilgili, is an aging silent film star at the sunset of his career.
This production is the brainchild of director Chuck Hudson, a disciple of the great mime Marcel Marceau. Hudson cleverly pulls dramatic cues from the worlds of mime and silent film into the production – two art forms rarely (if ever) associated with the very vocal, very big world of opera.
In the interview, Lois Reitzes speaks with Burak Bilgili, who plays the title role, and Alexey Lavrov, who plays Dr. Malatesta, about their initial skepticism of integrating mimicry, silent film and a new setting in “Don Pasquale.”
The Atlanta Opera presents “Don Pasquale” on March 25, 28, 31 and April 2 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
