Crash, Chemical Spill Forced Downtown Connector Lanes To Close

Lanes on both sides of the Downtown Connector are now open after they were closed around 3 a.m. today due to a crash and chemical spill.
The southbound lanes reopened around 6:30 a.m. today, and the northbound lanes opened around 7:30 a.m., WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News reports.
A tractor-trailer overturned during a crash with an SUV and spilled hazardous materials. Fifty gallons of diesel fuel and up to 250 gallons of a toxic chemical spilled onto the interstate, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Atlanta fire officials said Benzoyl chloride, an industrial chemical used for dyes, is the chemical that spilled onto the roadway, Channel 2 reports.
Georgia State University posted on its website that due to the crash on Interstate 75/85 at North Avenue, the Downtown Atlanta campus’s opening has been delayed until 10 a.m.
The closing of lanes on the Downtown Connector came as Metro Atlanta is still dealing with traffic issues stemming from the March 30 collapse of an I-85 bridge.
