Jimmy Carter says he voted for Bernie Sanders

Carter and Sanders both pointed to economic inequality as a major reason President Donald Trump was elected. 

“I’m relieved to know that Sen. Sanders agrees with me,” Carter said.

Carter was one of few major Democrats in Georgia not to endorse Hillary Clinton during the 2016 primary.

He didn’t publicly endorse Sanders either, and ultimately backed Clinton in a video at the Democratic National Convention, after the primary.

Human Rights

In a discussion about human rights Monday night, Carter said the U.S. has lost its place as a leader in that area around the world. He added that humans rights have “slipped backwards” all over the globe.  

“Quite often a government that’s inclined to violate human rights, when they see the United States abandon that as one of our key elements of foreign policy they say, ‘well it’s okay for us to do it now,’” Carter said.

Sanders and Carter agreed on just about everything, as they discussed domestic and foreign policy.

Sanders said he’s worried about Democracy in the U.S. and abroad under the Trump administration.

“I don’t think the leadership of this country today, in fact, believes very strongly in human rights. That’s not what they believe in,” he said.  

Last week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said U.S. economic and national security interests come before values of “human dignity” and “freedom.”
