Rep. John Lewis Meets Ga. Constituents At Meet-And-Greet

“I love that Congressman Lewis is always at town hall meetings, out among the people,” Jenkins said. 

Lori Leary, who lives in Decatur, agreed.

“I’ve been to several of the meetings in [Sen. David] Perdue’s office and [Sen. Johnny] Isakson’s office and … they’re never there,” Leary said. “They don’t seem to have the time for their constituents.” 

Lewis said all members of Congress should meet the people who elected them.

“It is a must. We cannot live in a bubble. We have to get out there so we know what people are concerned about,” he said. 

Some of Lewis’s constituents wanted to talk about the American Health Care Act. Lewis voted against the bill, which passed the House of Representatives earlier this month. 

“It’s important for us to kill this bill,” Lewis said. “It wants to take health care away from people. That’s not right, that’s not fair, that’s not just.”

The health care bill is now in the Senate. Lewis said he’ll continue to fight the measure. He added that the current political climate has made people afraid of their government, but he hopes meetings like these can work towards changing that.
