Atlanta Botanical Garden Transforms Into Outdoor Opera House

Eric Einhorn is well-versed in the art of outdoor opera. He’s the general and artistic director of On Site Opera, a New York City-based company specializing in on-site, immersive opera performances. He is in town to direct a co-production with the Atlanta Opera of an early Mozart work, “The Secret Gardener.”

The Atlanta Opera and On Site Opera produced the opera in New York, and each new location provides new challenges, he said in an interview with Lois Reitzes.

“The [Atlanta Botanical Garden] gives us the challenge of simply fitting this in a different type of space,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot immersion in and among the audience. That’s sort of a trademark of what we do, surrounding the audience.”

Mozart’s “The Secret Gardener” is this Thursday through Saturday at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Ticketed seats are sold out but garden visitors are invited to watch and listen from anywhere in the new Skyline Garden.
