Sen. Johnny Isakson will speak to Georgians by telephone.

Emory University political science professor Andra Gillespie says she’s impressed.

“There are a lot of Republican members of Congress who are, perhaps, gun-shy about participating in these debates because there’s certainly been a lot of opposition that’s been mobilized to attend these town hall meetings,” Gillespie said.

Tim Denson, who directs the left-wing grassroots activist group “Athens for Everyone,” credits Isakson for holding a town hall meeting — even if it is by phone.

“It is, at least, a step here. We’re seeing a lack of those steps at all from any of the other senators right now who are basically hiding from their constituents while they discuss this health care bill.”

The telephone town hall starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday. People can participate by registering on Isakson’s website.

WABE contacted Georgia Sen. David Perdue’s office on any plans he might have to address the public on health care. They responded with this statement:

“Senator Perdue proudly represents over 10 million Georgians and appreciates feedback from anyone who contacts our offices to voice their concerns. Our team meets and talks with hundreds of Georgians every day to discuss issues important to them and their families.”
