The historic Plaza Theatre is Atlanta’s only independent movie theater, and every year it’s the site of films festivals, special screenings of locally produced films, classics and, of course, live performances of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

The movie theater just announced a new owner, Chris Escobar. He’s the director of the Atlanta Film Society, which runs the Atlanta Film Festival.

“I have the intention of running that theater for the next 40 years and passing it on to my kids,” Escobar said in an interview with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes.

In the interview, Escobar said he plans to expand the Plaza’s offerings but also make sure the spirit of the Plaza remains the same.

“The idea is to have something for everyone – the classics, the currents, the rare finds, all of that,” he said. “There’s a lot to be done to both protect what we love the Plaza and enhance that and then make that more of a consistent experience.”

The keys to the Plaza Theatre will officially be handed to Escobar next month. You can hear more of Escobar’s plans and the history of the Plaza in the interview above.
