The Atlanta Humane Society is waiting to take in more animals to make room in shelters that could get hit by Hurricane Irma.

So far the shelter has taken in 80 animals from Osceola County, Florida, which is just north of Orlando.

“We’re taking them into our care to enable space to open up in those shelters for potential lost and abandoned animals,” said Christina Hill, AHS’s spokesperson. “But also, some of these shelters, they’re in that flood zone where they might flood depending on how the hurricane hits.”

Hill said the humane society has turned a large meeting room into a temporary shelter to accommodate the new arrivals. AHS is also sending some animals to shelters farther north.

The shelter had already taken in 130 animals from Louisiana and Texas because of Hurricane Harvey.

Fulton and DeKalb County shelters, which are both ran by LifeLine, took in 16 cats from Houston, Texas. A spokesperson said the shelters are limited on space.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources is currently allowing dogs at cottages that don’t typically allow pets and also waiving pet fees.
