At a press event Thursday, Mayor Kasim Reed said the canopies will ease traffic congestion at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by expanding roadways and including overhead pedestrian walkways. The canopies, which are expected to be completed in 2019, will also include LED lights that can change colors.

Reed urged patience during the construction.

“[There’s an] awful lot of folks on Twitter with an awful lot of complaints, but you really can’t move forward with a $6 billion capital campaign without a little disruption, so we’re going to do our best to make this as quick as possible,” Reed said.

Airport General Manager Roosevelt Council said construction on the canopies will be limited to overnight hours between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
