Atlanta-based couple team up to write a vibrant anthology for Black families inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois

The mission and vision of a children’s magazine that was launched by Historian and Sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois more than 100 years ago is being spotlighted and reimagined. Du Bois’ monthly magazine was called The Brownies’ Book.

The anthology aimed to educate, encourage and empower Black children by instilling in them self-respect and self-assurance at a time when Black progress was overlooked by mainstream media outlets in the early 20^th Century.

On Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Dr. Karida Brown, a professor of sociology at Emory University and author, and her husband Charly Palmer, an artist and illustrator and former Spelman College professor, talked with show host Rose Scott about Du Bois’ legacy, his scholarly work, and how it inspired them to create their new book, “The New Brownies’ Book: A Love Letter to Black Families.”
