2 Democrats Face Off In A Runoff For Georgia’s 6th District Senate Seat
There were five Republican candidates in last month’s 6th District Senate race and just three Democrats. The GOP vote got split more ways, so the top two finishers are Democrats. Fulton and Cobb county voters will cast their ballots between two Democrats in Tuesday’s runoff election for Georgia’s 6th District Senate race.
In Georgia special elections, there are no party primaries. All the candidates are on a single ballot.
There were five Republican candidates in last month’s 6th District Senate race and just three Democrats. The GOP vote got split more ways, so the top two finishers, Jaha Howard and Jen Jordan, are Democrats.
Republican state Sen. Josh McKoon, R-Columbus, said he’ll introduce a bill to keep that from happening again by getting rid of the single-ballot system in special elections.
“We all have rules in which we operate in, and you just don’t get to change those arbitrarily because you didn’t like the outcome,” said Michael Owens, head of Cobb’s Democratic Party.
But Cobb County GOP head Jason Shepherd argues otherwise. He said McKoon’s planned legislation is about fixing a flaw in the system.
“You may kind of smirk about outdoing the other side, but you really have to look at what’s fair for the voters and what’s right for the voters,” Shepherd said.
Shepherd said he supports the proposed bill but would like to see it tweaked a little more.
