Georgia Utility Regulators Continue Hearings On Vogtle Nuclear Plant

Next week, the Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities in Georgia, will hold its next round of hearings on the future of the nuclear reactor expansion project at Plant Vogtle near Augusta. But the PSC staff has already filed testimony, arguing maybe the troubled project shouldn’t have a future.

“Staff concludes that completion of the Project is no longer economic on a to-go (forward-looking) basis given the additional costs and schedule delays, even without considering the conditions requested by the company,” the staff wrote in their testimony.

WABE’s Molly Samuel has been following the Vogtle project. She joined Denis O’Hayer on “Morning Edition” to discuss that testimony and a recent payment agreement between Georgia Power, Vogtle’s majority owner, and Toshiba, parent company of Westinghouse, which was building the plant until it went bankrupt earlier this year.
