Liyana” is an unusual film for its genre and a beautiful meditation on storytelling itself.

Filmmakers Amanda and Aaron Kopp weave back and forth between a traditional documentary about the children’s lives and the story they create about a young girl named Liyana.

In an interview with Lois Reitzes on “City Lights,” director and producer Aaron Kopp talked about the choice to have the children tell their own fantastic story, which in many ways reveals more about their everyday lives.

“We decided to trust fiction to bring us truth about these kids.”

Amanda and Aaron Kopp are currently screening “Liyana” as part of the South Arts’ Southern Circuit tour of independent filmmakers.

Their next screening in Georgia will take place Sunday in Winder. A theatrical release is slated for the fall. More information about that can be found on their Facebook page.
