Students are returning to the high school in North Georgia where a teacher is accused of firing a gunshot from inside his classroom. The case has fueled a national debate over whether teachers should be armed to defend against school shootings.

Police say social studies teacher Jesse Randal Davidson refused to allow anyone into his classroom Wednesday and then fired a gunshot out the window.

No one was shot, but his actions prompted a chaotic evacuation and lockdown at Dalton High School.

Davidson faces six charges including aggravated assault; terroristic threats and acts; and having a weapon on school property. His lawyer hasn’t returned phone and email messages seeking comment.

The high school closed Thursday after the shooting, but reopens Friday. Police, counselors and social workers will be on hand.
