May is Arts Month in Decatur, and to kick off the festivities is one of Atlanta’s favorite summertime activities, The Decatur Lantern Parade. This year’s parade is happening on Friday. The event is co-sponsored by the Decatur Arts Alliance and the Decatur Education Foundation, and is free to attend.

Here’s what you need to know if you plan on participating in the parade this year:

Who’s it for?

The route of the march is less than a mile and stays relatively flat, so it will be manageable for the young and old alike. Even if you don’t live in the Decatur area, the Lantern Parade is open to all of Atlanta – as are all of the events surrounding the Decatur Arts Festival.

Location and Time

The parade will start at Color Wheel Studio at 508 E. Howard Avenue and will conclude a half-mile away at Decatur Square. The march will kick-off shortly after 8 p.m. on May 11, so try to arrive early to secure nearby parking.

Lantern Guidelines

Lanterns aren’t absolutely required to participate in the parade. But, you can make your own lantern at home, or attend a lantern-making workshop and learn how to make a lantern hat, parasol, or globe. Chantelle Rytter of the Color Wheel Studio will be hosting a variety of workshops in the two weeks preceding the parade, which you can sign up for online.

The only restrictions are on flying lanterns and non-battery powered lamps. In other words, please refrain from using any open flames.
