A five-day Dragon Con membership pass may cost $160 but there’s a much cheaper way to enjoy Dragon Con this week.

In honor of the popular convention’s return the Public Library Systems of both Fulton County and Clayton County, the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District and Central Atlanta Progress, Inc., a 200-member downtown business association, will host a free public welcome party at Woodruff Park on Thursday.

The welcome party will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include free activities such as drone races, a photo booth, button making, 3D drawing, a DJ demo, virtual reality gaming and purple fountains in honor of Dragon Con. The fountains, normally dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day, will take on the special hue from Thursday morning till Sunday evening at the close of Dragon Con.

“We’re continuing to build on our partnership with these organizations and we are excited to celebrate a new event in the Dragon Con welcome party,” said Paige Sullivan of Central Atlanta Progress. “Plus, it will make for a great photo opportunity.”

Along with those activities there will be a school supply drive with all donations going to Literacy Action, an Atlanta-based adult literacy, life and work skills initiative. Donations of notebooks, pencils, USB drives, pens, highlighters and two-pocket folders are recommended.

The amount of foot traffic for both Dragon Con and the Decatur Book Festival, both massive events that bring thousands to the cities of Atlanta and Decatur annually, taking place over the Labor Day weekend will keep some locals away from downtown and MARTA. The free Dragon Con welcome party is an event that can not only give people a place to go and get the feel for Dragon Con during the week, but will also be a way to save money and miss weekend traffic while still being a part of the Dragon Con phenomenon.

Woodruff Park is located at 91 Peachtree Street between Auburn and Edgewood Avenues. Dragon Con will take place throughout the city beginning on Thursday and ending Monday.
