PHOTOS: The Atlanta Botanical Garden Brings Back Pumpkin Carving Contest

Despite the wind and rain, three carvers battled it out during the Great Pumpkin-Carving Contest held in the Atlanta Botanical Garden on Oct. 25.
Last year’s pumpkin carving contest winner, oral surgeon Jonathan M.C. Threadgill competed with the help of his teammate Ruben D. Maestre to reclaim his first place title. The pair carved up a classic smiling jack o’lantern with a smaller frowning carved gourd inside of it.
However, the crowd’s applause crowned Thomas Satcher, 3D artist and sculptor, the winner of the contest. He shaved away at his pumpkin to create a monster’s face within the allotted 45 minutes. He said the massive pumpkin inspired him to carve a creature with a big appetite.
“I like for the whole entire pumpkin to become the character. I tried to blend it in with the actual rind of the pumpkin,” Satcher said.
