Hurricane Francine is bringing fearsome winds to Louisiana’s coast on the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday afternoon, as people in New Orleans and other affected areas use sandbags and boards to keep themselves and their property safe.

In an afternoon update, the National Hurricane Center upgraded Francine to a Category 2 hurricane, as the storm’s maximum sustained winds are 100 mph, with higher gusts. As of 4 p.m. CT, Francine was about 40 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, La., moving northeast at 17 mph.

“Hurricane force-winds are located just offshore,” the National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon update. “Now is the time to stay inside and away from windows. Have multiple ways to receive warnings and updates.”
