Georgia State Building Demolition To Cost $10 Million

Georgia State University officials say the cost to demolish an empty building at the heart of its downtown Atlanta campus has doubled to $10 million.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that university officials explained the cost increase to Georgia’s Board of Regents on Tuesday. Georgia State blames higher-than-expected costs of relocating utility lines and says it will pay for the increase.

Georgia State wants to replace Kell Hall with a greenway, sidewalks and stairs between surrounding buildings and streets.

A regents committee approved the revised plans, which are designed to create more welcoming gathering places at the center of the urban campus.

Kell Hall was built as a multi-story garage in 1925 and converted to academic space in 1946.
