The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Performs Free Concert In Piedmont Park

There will be a full-length substantial symphony this Wednesday evening at Piedmont Park. City Lights’ host Lois Reitzes talked with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s music director Robert Spano about the performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. The evening will begin with a pre-concert performance from the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra at 6:30 p.m.
The ASO’s free concert of “Tchaikovsky & More” will take place this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Piedmont Park. Next Wednesday, on June 19, the ASO and a stellar group of opera vocalists will perform works from Carmen, La Bohème and Porgy and Bess.
The orchestra has performed at Piedmont Park since it 1976, when it was led by conductor Robert Shaw. Since then, they have performed over 100 concerts in the park.
“It’s very different to perform in a setting like that [Piedmont Park], instead of in a concert hall or even in a situation like Chastain Park. Piedmont Park, where we play, is not really a standing situation. We set it up so we’re playing in the park,” said Spano. The ASO puts in a lot of thought as to what music really carries itself in the park and how it will be perceived by the audience.
