For local hip-hop artist Barvis, his childhood growing up in Atlanta’s Westside shapes a lot of his music.

“I’m the real Atlanta. A Grady baby,” he told “Closer Look” host Rose Scott.

He opens up about his story in a new song, “Where I’m Goin,” which he performed in studio Friday for Closer Look’s Summer Indie Music series.

“Anyone that came from where I came from, I just want to show you, you can make it,” Barvis said.

He was drawn to music at an early age and quickly learned a number of instruments including saxophone, viola, cello, bass, electric guitar and snare drums.

His inspiration comes from artists like Young Thug and Prince.

After working as a party promoter, Barvis found his love of hip-hop and freestyle rap. Now, he wants music to be a part of his future.

“I actually do want this as a career. It started as a hobby, a side thing, but the way people look at me, you know, they call me a rock star. It feels good,” he said.

Above all, Barvis said he wants to keep working and refine his craft.

“I’ve got the connections. I just have to grind and keep going. That’s all I can do is keeping going,” Barvis said.
