You may have seen local artist and muralist Muhammad Yungai‘s murals in Castleberry Hill or on the corner of Sunset and Boone, or perhaps even in a school hallway.

Muhammad’s work usually centers around important figures in the civil rights movement. He has done work for the Superbowl committee, but his real passion is painting murals in schools.

“My years as an art teacher made me profoundly better as an artist, and accidentally gave my work more purpose. It became a calling, to add more color and warmth to the school that I worked, through small murals. My vibrantly colored murals depicting inspirational and diverse images of people of color adorn the walls in the hallways, classrooms, and lobbies ” Yungai said.

The teacher turned full time artist joined “City Lights” for a discussion on his art work.
