A century ago, South Downtown was Atlanta’s front door. But people and business moved away, leaving it a shell of what it once was.

Now, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta, there’s a plan to bring it back.

“I love this view right here,” says David Cummings, the CEO of Atlanta Ventures, the company that’s redeveloping this neighborhood. “You got ultra modern Mercedes Benz right in front of you. You got new skyscrapers coming up from Centennial Yards. This huge white building here is a federal courthouse. Looks like 1980s Miami Vice.”
