State Sen. Nikema Williams Plans To Explore Georgia’s New Abortion Law In Next Session

State Sen. Nikema Williams, chairperson of the Georgia Democratic Party, says she is anxious to explore the state’s controversial abortion law during the next legislative session in January 2020.
While the law is tied up in court, Williams longs to continue the conversation.
Williams recently traveled to El Salvador to explore the effect that restrictive abortion laws have on women in that country. She visited the country as part of a delegation of five legislators from states she considers “hostile to abortion rights.” Williams referenced states such as Georgia, Alabama and Ohio, which have all passed high-profile abortion bans in 2019.
El Salvador has had a strict abortion law in place since 1988, and to date, more than 140 women have been prosecuted. According to Williams, 36 have been sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.
Williams says her journey to El Salvador was purely a fact-finding trip. She says the stories she heard border on inhumane.
She tells WABE’s “Morning Edition” host Lisa Rayam about one high school student who now sits in a El Salvador jail.
