Nearly 190 million tons of freight per year travels by train across Georgia.

State officials compile statistics like these and look to the future in a document known as the State Rail Plan.

The last time the plan was published was 2015. At the time, it predicted a 0.5 percent growth per year in rail freight. But it also cautioned of slower growth with the continued decline of coal, which accounts for more than a quarter of the cargo aboard trains in Georgia.

Rail is seen as a more fuel-efficient way to haul goods and also cuts down on the number of trucks on the road. It’s a sector that directly employs 6,000 people across the state.

In addition to freight, the rail plan also looks at passenger travel by train, namely the four Amtrak routes running through the state.

GDOT is asking for public feedback to be included in the 2020 state rail plan. The deadline to complete an online survey is Friday.
