MODA’s ‘Learning From Nature’ Exhibit Showcases Designs Inspired By Biomimicry

Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel once said “Nature is man’s teacher. She unfolds her treasures in his search, unseals his eye, illumes his mind, and purifies his heart.” Nature as a model for modern solutions is the focus of “Learning from Nature: The Future of Design” the new exhibition at MODA, the Museum of Design Atlanta.
“City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke with Laura Flusche, the executive director of MODA, and with Dr. Jeannette Yen, director of the Center for Biologically Inspired Design at Georgia Tech. Yen also acted as an exhibition advisor.
The focus of their exhibit is on biomimicry.
“Biomimicry is a design strategy that’s used by designers across disciplines. It’s a strategy by which designers study ecosystems very closely by looking at what’s happening in nature, why it’s happening, how nature over 3.8 billion has evolved ways to solve some of the same challenges humans have. And then they’re interpreting what’s happening in nature and adapting it to use in order to solve human challenges,” said Flusche.
“Learning from Nature” will be on display through May 23.
