'We will have a lot of families in the dark': Energy bill assistance program up in the air after Trump cuts

Nearly 140,000 households in Georgia receive help with their energy bills from federally funded LIHEAP programs. But as the Trump administration makes staffing cuts to the program, some advocates worry it could leave vulnerable families without power. (AP Photo/Matthew Hinton)

Even in a normal year, Patricia Johnson says more people need help paying their power bills in the Augusta area than she’s able to assist.

Johnson works at CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority, an agency that aims to address poverty. They offer programs that serve seniors and children, veterans and people with AIDS; they give guidance on buying homes and help for people facing foreclosure.

And there’s the initiative Johnson coordinates: the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
