You’d be surprised how much in common you can have with someone from a completely different background.

Hogai Nassery comes from a large Muslim family that immigrated to Georgia when she was a girl. Douglas Wood was born into a small Baptist family that has lived in the state for generations.

The two met while attending the University of Georgia. Friendship turned into romance, and Hogai and Douglas were married in Atlanta.

This story was produced locally by Stephen Key and recorded in partnership with The Atlanta History Center, which hosts Atlanta’s StoryCorps booth.
